According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 100 million Americans are living with diabetes or prediabetes. More than 80,000 Americans die each year due to diabetes, which makes it the nation’s seventh-leading cause of death. Virginia Cooperative Extension faculty at Virginia State University are offering help.

If you have prediabetes, you can improve your health outcomes. You can join the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to make healthy, lasting changes that will reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. A one-hour information session will be held on Tuesday, April 9, from 11 a.m. to noon at Virginia State University, L. Douglas Wilder Building, Room 300, Petersburg, Va.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long program that gives participants access to a trained lifestyle coach; skills needed to lose weight, including learning about healthy eating, how to increase physical activity and manage stress; and a support group of like-minded individuals that will provide encouragement and motivation.

This informational workshop is free and open to the public. To register, visit www.ext.vsu.edu/calendar, click on the event and then click on the registration link.

Since one out of three American adults has prediabetes, this is a critical health issue for which action is needed. The Diabetes Prevention Program can help those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes make essential changes that will put them on a path to better health and potentially reduce their risk.

If you need further information about attending this information session or are a person with a disability and desire any assistive devices, services or other accommodations to participate in this activity, please contact Crystal Johnson at cjohnson@vsu.edu, (804) 524-5966/ TDD (800) 828-1120 during the business hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to discuss accommodations no later than five days prior to the event.
