Animal Systems
Overview
Animal Systems at Virginia State University (VSU) advances the University’s teaching, research, and Cooperative Extension mission by supporting sustainable, pasture-based livestock systems that meet the needs of Virginia’s small-scale and limited-resource farmers. Our work emphasizes production efficiency, climate adaptability, technology adaptation, and market responsiveness while providing hands-on learning opportunities for students and applied, research-based solutions for producers.
Small Ruminants
Virginia State University currently operates a sheep research and demonstration hub, utilizing 15 one-acre rotationally grazed pastures comprised of perennial fescue (infected and novel) and seasonally rotated annual forages, inter-seeded with clover. The system supports a flock of Barbados Blackbelly and St. Croix hair sheep managed under an accelerated mating program and predominantly pasture-based management. This unit serves as a living laboratory for applied research, producer education, and student training.
Beef Cattle
Building on the foundation of our hair sheep program, VSU has launched a Registered South Poll Cattle Program to expand its Animal Systems portfolio and support forage-based, low-input beef production aligned with Virginia’s climate and producer needs. This program will serve as a platform for applied research, producer education, and hands-on training focused on resilient, efficient beef systems. Please check back soon and visit our Events page for upcoming beef cattle programming, workshops, and field-based learning opportunities as details become available.
