PROFILE: New Faces in the College of Agriculture
Angela Bacskocky is assistant professor and program coordinator for the Textiles, Apparel and Merchandising Management program in the department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS).
She was a contestant on Project Runway Season 12, and has worked for such designers as Alexander McQueen and Felder Felder.
Bacskocky studied menswear fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art in Design in London and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fashion design from Virginia Commonwealth University and Master of Fine Arts in fibers from Savannah College of Art and Design.
She has developed her own line of handmade apparel and accessories and set up a production studio in Richmond, Va. for her conceptual work that attempts to merge the lines between fashion and art. She has shown her collections at Fashion Week in Richmond, New York and Charleston and sells internationally.
Her work has appeared in Marie Claire, Teen Vogue, Women’s Wear Daily, The Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Virginia Living and also on Good Morning America, Refinery 29 and Martha Stewart’s American Made Campaign.
Jada E. Brooks is associate professor and coordinator of Family, Child and Community Services in the department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS). She is a graduate of VSU earning a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences and Master of Education in Career and Technical Education. Upon graduation she was employed in several local public school systems as a family and consumer sciences teacher.
Brooks went on to pursue a Ph.D. in human development with a concentration in family studies from Virginia Tech. While attending Virginia Tech she completed teaching and research assistantships, where she gained experience in adult day services, teaching large lecture courses and collecting and analyzing data.
In 2011, Brooks successfully defended her dissertation examining the impact of family relationships on academic persistence in African-American college students attending a historically black college. She has since presented her research at local, regional and national conferences and also published in scholarly journals on topics related to college student retention, African-American families, college transitions and emerging adulthood.
She is a member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society, National Council on Family Relations among other organizations. She has previously taught at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Virginia Commonwealth University and Randolph Macon College.
Meghan R. Garrett works with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and the Dietetic Internship program at VSU. Prior to joining the VSU team, she worked as a nutritionist for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children and as a medical facilities inspector for the Virginia Department of Health.
She has been a registered dietitian for 17 years and holds a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech and Master of Science from the University of Delaware. Her favorite foods are blue crab, strawberries and chocolate.
