Soil Amendment and Composting Field Day
Virginia State University and Tricycle invite you for a field day to learn and discuss more about soil amendments and composting. The field day will include a tour and discussions of various on-site practices to improve the soil in a sustainable way.
A soil amendment is any material added to a soil to improve its physical properties, such as water retention, permeability, water infiltration, drainage, aeration and structure. The goal is to provide a better environment for roots.
Composting refers to the decomposition of organic waste or material into organic fertilizer which can be utilized by plants in our gardens. It is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of recycling nutrients and it is something that all of us can do in our own backyard gardens.
Speakers: Dr. Leonard Githinji, Sustainable and Urban Agriculture Specialist at Virginia State University; Dr. Greg Evanylo, Professor and Extension Specialist of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech University; and Amy Wildermann, Urban Farm Manager, Tricycle.
THIS EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
