Hive Inspection and Expansion

State Apiarist, Keith Tignor, will present an in-person lecture at the VSU Randolph Farm Pavilion large classroom, followed by a hands-on demonstration at the VSU Randolph Farm Bee Yard. He will demonstrate how to open a hive for inspection, how to expand hives before they swarm, and methods for collecting swarms to start a new hive. Topics will also include bee ecology, hive components and construction, beekeeping equipment, bee nucs, bee packages, feeding and caring for bees, integrated pest management, and colony collapse disorder. This workshop is intended for people with no experience up to 5 years of experience. To attend the Bee Yard demonstration, you must provide your own bee suit, wear light colors and closed-toe footwear, and make sure not to wear any cologne or perfume.
