ETTRICK, VA – January 15, 2024 – In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, Chesterfield County, Virginia State University (VSU), and HandsOn Greater Richmond united for a powerful "Day On, Not a Day Off" of service. At the VSU Randolph Farm, volunteers collaborated with the VSU College of Agriculture team, embodying Dr. King's commitment to service.

Distinguished guests, including USDA Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small, highlighted the impactful MLK Day of Service. Alongside her were Joe Gutherie, Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), and members of the Chesterfield County Board. The event marked a collective effort to actively contribute to positive change and sustainable development in the local community.

"As we come together for the VSU MLK Day of Service, 'Greater Grows Here' isn't just a tagline—it's a commitment," said Dr. Robert N. Corley, III, Dean and Director of Land-Grant Programs at the VSU College of Agriculture. "Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small's choosing our farm and community for hands-on engagement emphasizes the ongoing growth of 'Greater' at VSU. This day of service exemplifies our dedication to fostering positive change and sustainable impact in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr."

Every volunteer project from the day of service will serve a greater purpose throughout the Commonwealth.

"Today showcased our dedication to community enrichment," explained Dr. Janine Woods, Associate Administrator of Extension Programs, VSU College of Agriculture. "Community members and student volunteers created DIY Hydroponic Kits for local K-12 schools, built aquaculture cages for farmers, and refreshed raised beds for the VSU Summerseat Campus and Community Garden. We are building structures and cultivating knowledge, environmental stewardship, and accessible nutrition to our community."

Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small will return to the VSU Campus on Tuesday, January 16, to highlight the University’s ongoing support for agricultural research and education and meet with students to discuss potential career opportunities available for the next generation of farmers, foresters, conservationists, and entrepreneurs.
